What is your mirror showing you, Wowos?
Denzel Washington, my favourite actor, once shared this story:
“And I’m looking in the mirror, and I see this woman under the dryer behind me and every time she looked up –she was looking at me. She was looking me in the eye, I don’t know who she was, and I said, you know, she said somebody give me a pen, give me a pencil. I have a prophecy. 27 March 1975, she said boy, you are going to travel the world and speak to millions of people. Now mind you, I flunked out of college. I’m thinking about joining the army. I didn’t know what I was going to do, and she is telling me I’m going to travel the world and speak to millions of people.”
When I arrived in Johannesburg, this woman I met on the train sat with me and explained which station I would get off at. I was so afraid. She sat with me and told me to get off when I get to the station before Randfontein, count from now on, there will be so and so stations (I can’t remember the number she gave me) - “you need to get off at the station before Randfontein”.
Kouzes and Posner wrote, “If you don’t believe the messenger, you won’t believe the message”.
I believed in this woman, and I counted the station and got off at that station before Randfontein. It was the right station.
John Kehoe wrote, “It’s natural to want all the answers before we’re willing to risk any legwork. We’d all love to see the steps and know all the details of everything that will happen to us. But you rarely see those details and steps at the beginning, and very often, things unfold in the most unexpected ways”. That is why Martin Luther King said, “take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase. Take the first step”.
So, today, Wowos, remember to believe the messenger for you to believe the message. Have a beautiful day.
